Just more than a week after the majority of Wynford Local School District residents voted to pass a bond levy issue in the general election, the Wynford Board of Education took the next step in making a new high school a reality.
The board passed a resolution authorizing the issuance of bonds in the amount not to exceed $17,060,000. The bonds officially are listed with the purpose of “constructing, improving and renovating school facilities, including a new high school….”
A tentative schedule for items that need to happen was given to those in attendance at the board meeting. The next due date is Jan. 2, when the district needs to submit a POS worksheet to Bricker and Eckler Attorneys at Law. A POS worksheet is an informational document with all the district’s information listed.
The final date listed on the schedule is March 20, which is listed as the date to close and fund bonds.
“Great things are happening here,” Treasurer Leesa Smith said. “It’s going to be busy, but what a great reason to be busy.”
The board also heard two presentations to begin the meeting.
The first was a group of junior high teachers who proposed the idea of Thursday school for students struggling academically. Which would include missing work or failing classes.
The teachers said not having summer school in recent years has made it more difficult to give the students the time to correct areas they are struggling in.
They also mentioned other schools having similar options.
The second presentation was given by a handful of elementary students who shared with the board the events that took place during the second annual Veteran’s Day assembly and the leadership day.
Two leadership days were hosted and guests from multiple other schools attended and were shown how the students were participating in the Leader In Me program.
“I have never been so proud as a professional of what our kids are doing,” Elementary Principal Nelle Nutter said.
A new tradition also was started at the meeting. Janel Brause of Brause Farms and The Timken Company were recognized as Partners in Education. The new form of recognition is for those who go above and beyond the giving of time, money or other resources to the district.
