Not everything up for competition at the 2014 Crawford County Fair will be of the farm animal variety.

Local 4-H members have prepared a wide variety of projects at the fair.

4-H non-farm projects up for review include sewing, cooking, art, photography, and even electrical presentations. Judging on those projects begins today and Bucyrus 4-H group Kilbourne Clovers spent Wednesday setting up booths at the fairgrounds.

Amber Ransom has entered a sewing project, and while not everything was easy, she did gain valuable skills from the project.

“Doing the sewing part was kind of hard, because I really didn’t know how to hand sew; so that was a learning progress,” Amber said.

The 4-H Style Review will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday in the Youth Building.

Naomi Belle learned the ways of the grill to enter the Grill Master portion of the 4-H culinary competition.

“I have been working on a bunch of different things. I made lemon pepper chicken, how to cook burgers, which with our grill it took 15 minutes. I also learned how to make a pizza in a pocket which is a pizza inside a pita pocket then wrapped in foil,” Naomia said. “It was pretty fun, but my favorite was doing the chicken. I thought it was funner (sic).”

Brooke Slagle will be presenting meatballs in the cooking competition for Snack Attack; however she almost chose another project.

“I was thinking about doing a bean salsa, but then I changed my mind because I think that a lot of people will be doing that recipe this year.”

Culinary projects will be judged Saturday afternoon, one day before the 2014 fair officially opens.

The 4-H cook book will be on sale outside of the Youth Building from 5 p.m. until the end of the King and Queen competition Sunday, and at the 4-H stand throughout the week of the fair.

“It is a very positive organization,” Killbourne Clovers advisor Sandy Fankhauser said. “We try to make sure the kids learn something and have a fun time doing it.”

The Crawford County Fair will run from July 13- July 19. The booth for WQEL. WBCO and Crawford County Now will have daily photo galleries on display as well as results from the fair.
