BUCYRUS — Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose recently directed all 88 Ohio county boards of elections to begin the process of purging 235,610 Ohioans who are considered inactive voters and Crawford County is no exception.
Crawford County Board of Elections Director Ruth Leuthold said 958 “second chance” letters were mailed out and are due back to her office by Sept. 6.
“If we don’t hear from them by Sept. 6, they will be purged,” Leuthold said.
Leuthold said letters originally were sent out in 2015 to people who had been inactive since 2013 and the recent letters are a follow-up to those who did not respond.
“We sent the second chance letters to people who have not voted, updated their information or signed a petition since 2013,” Leuthold said.
She said the purpose of purging inactive voters is to keep clean voter records throughout the state.
“We have received some of the letters back as undeliverable and have received calls from residents who now live at the person’s former address who want to know why the notices have been sent to their addresses that they have had for several years,” Leuthold said.
She said all Ohio residents can check their voter status and update information at vote.ohio.gov.
“They can change their information online, print a form to fill out and send to us or they can call us for the form and we will mail them one to their current address,” Leuthold said.
