BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Local residents can paddle water reservoirs, track migrating monarchs, and learn target shooting during a series of free community events hosted by the Crawford Park District this September.
The slate of early September outdoor activities includes:
- Morning Paddle: Saturday, Sept. 5, at 8 a.m. at Neff Reservoir, State Route 98, east of Bucyrus. Beginners will receive basic instruction and safety tips before launching. Attendees should wear shoes that can get wet. Equipment is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and no registration is required.
- Archery Basics: Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598. Participants ages 7 and older can learn safety and target shooting skills during two available sessions at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Equipment is provided, but space is limited. Registration is required by calling 419-683-9000.
- Face to Face: Frogs and Toads: Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 5:30 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park. Naturalist Donald will host an up-close look at the nature center’s live gray treefrogs, American toads, and other amphibians while discussing their life cycles and local habitats.
- Monarch Tagging: Thursday, Sept. 10, at 5:30 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park. All ages can learn about butterfly migration and assist with research for Kansas University by capturing, tagging, measuring, and releasing monarchs. Nets are provided.
- Migration Prairie Walk: Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 4924 Henry Cooper Road. Volunteer Mark Schanzenbach will guide a tour of his private prairie plantings to highlight late-season wildflowers and migrating birds resting on their trek south. Attendees are encouraged to bring a smartphone to use identification apps.
