MARION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Originally built in 1967 as Green Acres Golf Course, the course has been part of the community for decades. Five years ago, new local ownership took over and began making improvements while still keeping the laid-back atmosphere many golfers have come to appreciate.

According to Superintendent Chris Rogers, much of the focus has been on improving the greens and fairways through irrigation upgrades and a stronger focus on turf health.

“We often hear from golfers that have been coming here for years say they’ve never seen the course look this good,” Rogers said. “That’s all my crew and I need to hear.”

One of the things that makes 3 Sticks stand out is its welcoming atmosphere for golfers of all ages and experience levels. The Par 60 course offers a shorter round than a traditional course, making it appealing for families, beginners and golfers with busy schedules.

“With everyone’s busy lifestyles, most golfers can get through a round in about three hours,” Rogers said.

Even though the course is shorter, experienced golfers still find it both fun and challenging.

The course continues to host outings, scrambles and leagues throughout the season while also looking for new ways to bring more people into the game. This year, 3 Sticks will host one of the Heart of Ohio Junior Golf tournaments on June 1.

The Marion Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing was also scheduled to take place at the course this spring before rainy weather forced both planned dates to be canceled.

New this year are two four-person golf carts, making it easier for families and groups to ride together during their rounds.

Additional improvements are also in the works, including continued irrigation upgrades and plans for a new nine-hole chip-and-putt course where the former driving range was located. The goal is to have it ready for the 2027 golf season.

Rogers said affordability is also important to the course, especially during difficult economic times.

“Weekend tee times for 18 holes and a cart are less than $40, and weekdays are even less,” he said.

For Rogers, seeing the course continue to improve while creating a place where people can spend time with family and friends has made the work rewarding.

“We want this to be your go-to course whether it’s for a family outing, a round with friends or a fun scramble where you meet new people,” he said. “Come check us out.”
