BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Midseason cross country preparation is all about timing, strength building, and mental growth as high school teams gear up for late-season championship runs.

Speaking on a recent edition of Coaches Corner Extra with host Josh Stallings, first-year Bucyrus cross country head coach David Jones shared insights into his team’s midseason evolution as they prepare for the upcoming Stars, Stripes, and Lights invitational at Seneca East.

Jones, a 2002 Bucyrus graduate who spent the prior five years as an assistant coach for the Redmen, noted that training transitions significantly from late summer to mid-autumn.

“At the beginning, we’re really just trying to get kids moving,” Jones said. “By the end, we’re really pushing them, doing strength building, and getting them to peak at the right time.”

As Northern 10 Athletic Conference competition heats up ahead of sectionals, districts, and regionals, Jones emphasized that progress extends beyond physical conditioning.

“I’m looking for our guys and gals to take another step forward,” Jones said. “Over the last couple of meets, we’ve really grown—mentally more than physically—and I’d like to see that continue as we get into the meat of the season.”
