There is only one local contested race on the ballot for the May 2 primary election, but it may prove to be a tipping point for change in Bucyrus.
Cory Tyrrell, who attempted to run for an At-Large seat on the Bucyrus City Council in the 2015 General Election, is challenging longtime council member Bruce Truka for the 1st Ward seat. That race will be determined in the primaries.
The other contested race – namely, the three At-Large seats – will be determined in the General Election. Incumbent Mark Makeever and newcomer Kevin Myers are listed for the Republican side while incumbent Dan Wirebaugh and former Bucyrus mayor Dan Ross are registered Democrats.
Incumbent Monica Sack is running for the 2nd Ward once again while Douglas Foght has put his name in for the 3rd Ward seat. Sis Love is once again running for City Council President and incumbent Jane Cremeans looks to return as Bucyrus City Treasurer.
Four seats will be up for Crestline Village Council, but so far incumbent Allen Laferty is the only name submitted.
Local issues for the primary were required to be filed by Feb. 1. Those will be certified by Feb. 9. Expected to be certified is a new 1.5-mill , eight-year levy for the purpose of supporting Children’s Services. That is a county-wide issue.
The Plymouth-Shiloh school district and the Tri-Rivers Vocational school district both have renewal levies on the ballot and will affect a limited number of voters in Crawford County.
