CRESTLINE, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Crawford Park District has released its schedule for early May, featuring a mix of educational hikes, hands-on wildlife encounters, and the return of a popular community fundraiser.
The month kicks off on Saturday, May 2, with two concurrent events at 2 p.m. At the Daughmer Bur Oak Savannah, located at 786 Marion-Melmore Rd., naturalists will lead a hike through the rare prairie habitat to spot migrating birds and ancient oaks. Simultaneously, at Lowe-Volk Park, Girl Scouts and their families are invited to a foraging program to learn how to identify and prepare edible plants found in the wild.
On Wednesday, May 6, at 5:30 p.m., Lowe-Volk Park will host “Face to Face: Turtles.” This hour-long family program allows visitors to meet the Nature Center’s turtle ambassadors, including woodland box and midland painted turtles, to learn about their unique adaptations.
The following weekend features the district’s major spring event on Saturday, May 9. Starting at 7 a.m., researcher Bob Scott Placier returns for his 19th year of Bird Banding at Lowe-Volk Park. This scientific study provides critical data on bird lifespans and migration patterns.
While the banding is underway, the district will host Pancakes in the Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For a donation, attendees can enjoy pancakes with real maple syrup and ham provided by Carle’s Bratwurst. All proceeds support the Crawford Park District’s ongoing conservation and programming efforts.
