NEWS RELEASE:

The Bucyrus City School District is excited to announce that eighth grade student Rosalyn Johnson will be one of 49 students competing in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee at Ohio University on March 24.

Qualifying for this event has been a long process. Johnson competed in the district-wide spelling bee, the Crawford County Spelling Bee, the Tri-County Spelling Bee and successfully completed and online test to qualify for the event in Athens.

“I’m excited to be in the regional spelling bee,” said Johnson. “I’ve worked really hard and am proud to be representing Bucyrus Middle School.”

This regional contest is part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. One student from the Athens regional will qualify for the national competition in Washington, DC.

Rosalyn’s mother, Monica Johnson, is very excited about this opportunity for her daughter because she has always wanted to take on the challenge of the spelling bee as long as it was offered to her. Rosalyn’s hard work preparing for the spelling bee makes her mother very proud.

“I think that this is important for her because she was able to get past the nerves of previous spelling bees,” said Monica. “Showing growth and reaching goals is what propels people forward, and this opportunity is especially important to her knowing it is her last chance to be involved in the spelling bee.”

“We are very proud of Rosalyn for her spelling accomplishments this year,” said Kevin Kimmel, Bucyrus Superintendent. “We know she will do very well in Athens and wish her nothing but success as she competes and represents our school district.”
