GALION — A five-year-old boy is home after he was believed to have received candy laced with drugs while trick-or-treating in Galion on Sunday.
According to Galion Police Chief Brian Saterfield, the boy tested positive for methamphetamines while at the hospital, but Saterfield said that does not mean the drugs were illegal.
He said many things including prescription medication and attention deficit and hyperactive medications contain different types of methamphetamines.
In a public Facebook post, which the Crawford County Now staff has chosen to not post due to it containing identifying information of the child, a parent of the boy said she suspected it to be Adderall.
The boy was released from the hospital Sunday evening and is recovering well, according to Saterfield.
Saterfield said no other reports of a similar nature have been made since Galion’s trick-or-treat event ended.
He added there is not a specific suspect in the case, but the investigation remains open.
“Certainly, a five-year-old with methamphetamines in their system isn’t right,” Saterfield said. “We are looking into all avenues.”
Saterfield said evidence was collected and is being sent to the Mansfield crime lab.
The police report said plastic teeth and candy were collected from the family’s residence as evidence.
The report said the boy was taken to the hospital after reportedly suffering from a seizure while eating candy received while trick-or-treating.
Initial reports said the boy was reported to have been trick-or-treating on the west side of Galion, in the area of Arlington and Highland avenues and Tidd Drive between 2-4 p.m.
