GALION — Galion motorists can expect to be driving a little slower on Ohio 598 after decisions made at Galion City Council’s regular meeting Tuesday evening.
Council voted unanimously to suspend the third reading of an ordinance that will follow suggestions made by the Ohio Department of Transportation after ODOT performed a speed study on Ohio 598.
Motorists soon will be subject to a 45-miles-per-hour speed limit from just north of Timberlane Drive to Brandt Road. The limit is a drop from the current speed limit of 50 miles per hour.
Councilman Mark Triplett made the motion to suspend the third reading, citing that another two-vehicle crash recently took place in that section of road.
In other council business, council also suspended the second and third readings of a Freese Grant project at Heise Park.
The project involves the city paying $8,750, or half, for handicap-accessible updates to the football stadium at Heise Park.
The updates include a handicap-accessible seating area on the north end of the stadium seats.
Council members heard from Galion resident Rich Henry on various topics.
Henry said he wanted to bring the log cabin at Heise Park’s roof to council’s attention. He said the cabin was the city’s first library, and its roof is in dire need of repair.
“The cabin is such a great part of Galion’s history,” Henry said. “We can’t just put it off. It’s in terrible shape.”
Galion Mayor Tom O’Leary said there currently is nothing in the city’s budget to fix the roof, but city officials notice it. He said that maybe the Galion Historical Society could partner with the city to address the issue.
Henry then addressed the lack of parking for bicycles in the city. He suggested placing bike racks near the city building and near the city’s gazebo.
Henry also said there are trees in various city parks that need looked at.
The meeting adjourned after 28 minutes.
