NORTH ROBINSON (Crawford County Now) — Host Colonel Crawford easily swept the Crawford County track and field championship here Friday night.

The Eagle boys won with 196.5 points to Galion’s 111. Bucyrus finished third with 79 points. On the girls side Colonel Crawford had 181 points with Crestline second at 102. Galion took third with 87 points.

New head coach Joey Bauer was pleased with the effort.

“We ran very well. Honestly — top to bottom — runs, distance, relays, hurdles. We did a really good job all around.”

Bauer took over for Preston Foy, who stepped down after a long and successful tenure.

“I ran the junior high program for a while and coached under coach Foy. I know how important it is to the school, just the number of championships we’ve had. Coach Foy was a great mentor to me, and I’ve got great coaches with me,” he said.

“I’ve had all these athletes in junior high so I’m very familiar with them. It’s nice to come full circle with some of them like Jacob Cochran, Shawn Auck, Dom Dean, Rylinn Edgington and Brynn Bruner. I’ve watched them grow up, so it’s very rewarding.”

Bruner and Edgington finished 1-2 in the 1600 meters, both clocking personal bests.

Bruner’s time was 5:36.15 and Edgington 5:39.03. Bruner also won the girls 800 meters in 2:31.17.

MVPS CHOSEN

Cochran was boys track MVP, based on total points. Three shared MVP for boys field events with Dom Dean, Buckeye Central’s Collin Perry and Logan Wright of Wynford.

Dean and Wright split the throwing events with Dean taking first in the shot put and Wright the discus throw. Wright’s 150-feet, 8-inch throw was a personal best.

Crestline took the girls MVPs with Jocelyn Noblit tops in running events and Bridget Belcik the field events.

Noblit won the 100 meters, took third in the 200 and second in the 400 meters. She got a PR in the first two events and lost to Wynford’s Megan Young by less than a second in an exciting race.

“The 200 was kind of slow right after the 400. It’s definitely the hardest. The 100 is definitely the hardest,” Noblit said. “You have to be committed, start out strong and toward the end just push.

“There are a lot of good athletes here. We have a couple more meets and I’m looking to do better in the post-season and hopefully make it to state.”

Belcik threw the discus a PR of 119-feet, 6 inches and was second to Crawford’s Robin Ehmann in the shot put. Savannah Clark of Bucyrus was second in the discus.

Ehmann, a junior, threw a PR of 33-feet, 9.5 inches.

REDMEN TOP VAULTER

Bucyrus sophomore Ivan Pirnstill cleared the bar at 13 feet, 8 inches to win the pole vault with ease.

“I’m pretty happy. It was windy, but it was at my back so it kind of helped. I need a bigger pole to go higher,” he said.

“I warm up and just kind of go. I put in a lot of time on my own. I train at Buckeye Pole Vault in Delaware like three times a week. It helps visualize and understand pole vault more. I just want to jump higher and get to my goals.”

JUMPING BUCK

Collin Perry took first place in the high jump with a PB of 6 feet, 2 inches. The Buckeye Central junior was second in the long jump to Galion’s Jacob Chambers and second in the 100 meters to Cochran.

“I did pretty good in the 100. It was a little windy,” Perry said. “My time was 11.63 and my PR is 11.6. High jump, I felt amazing. I went for 6-4 and barely missed it. I almost tied my PR in long jump.”

Competing in four events requires a lot of work.

“It requires a certain level of mental toughness. I do my stretches before, and I like to roll my legs out. I bring a roller with me everywhere.

“I’d like to see the same competitiveness at districts, maybe even regionals and state. I like to compete against guys who are better than me. ”

BACK FROM INJURY

Galion’s Jacob Chambers is coming off a broken leg suffered near the end of football season. That didn’t stop him from winning the long jump at 21 feet, 6.25 inches.

“I was a little sore going into it. My last two jumps felt better. It’s been tough, a lot of mental pieces playing a part,” he said.

“By the end of the season, hopefully, I’ll be doing pretty good. That’s when it matters.”

RUNNING ROYAL

Wynford sophomore Megan Young took the 200 meters in 27.68 and 400 meters in 1:00.93, a PR.

She also teamed with Willa Johnson, Eden Cassaro and Ava Stuckey to claim the girls 4X100 in 52.68 seconds.

“We didn’t have any meets, so we just trained all week, working on handoffs to make sure we were ready. We knew we had a chance.”

Young edged Noblit in the 400 meters.

“I felt good the first 200, but I saw her out of the corner of my eye. I just had to stay with her until the end and pushed through. It felt nice,” Young said.

“Last year I didn’t PR the whole season. This season I PRd at Shelby, and PRd at Clyde and again today.”

EAGLES DUO GO 1-2

The tandem of Roen Thew and Avery Powers battled to the wire in 110-meter hurdles, with Thew nudging his teammate, 16.05-16.30.

“He got me out of the blocks,” Thew said. “I had the start on him but it kind of fell apart. It’s always nice to duke it out with your teammates,” Powers added.

Thew also took the 200 meters with a PR of 23.21 to edge another teammate Jacob Cochran.

“We’re always close in practice and we push each other every day,” Powers said.

  • Powers, John DeGray, Thew and Cochran took the boys 4X400 relay in 3:35.20.
  • Karter Boggs of Bucyrus ran a season best 4:26.84 in the boys 1600 meters. He did likewise in the 3200 in 10:16.87.
  • Colten Keller came in second (4:39.58) and Shawn Auck third (4:51.60) in the 1600. Auck’s was a season best. He also was second in the 3200.
  • Colonel Crawford freshman Cami Roston won the girls pole vault at 9 feet.
  • Teammate Emmi Powers took the high jump with a PR of 5-feet.
  • Lady Eagle Ella Agee was second to Noblit in the 100 with a PR of 13.74.
  • Buckeye’s Kalynne Butterfield got first in the girls long jump with a season best effort of 16 feet, .75 inches.
