LEXINGTON, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Robert Whitney, a longtime Lexington Local Schools board member, and a prominent defense attorney, passed away on Monday. Whitney held the record for being the longest-serving board member in the history of Ohio. He joined Lexington’s school board in April 1964 after interviewing for the position following the resignation of another board member.
Superintendent Jeremy Secrist described Whitney as an icon in the legacy of the school system. In recognition of his dedicated service, the performing arts center in the new 7-12 grade building was named after Whitney, who was a native of Lexington and a graduate of the school. Secrist acknowledged Whitney’s leadership in shaping opportunities for students in the arts and stated that the new facility stands as a reflection of his service to the district.
In 2017, the board honored Whitney by naming its meeting room after him. However, the new building, which opened in September 2022, did not have a room dedicated to meetings.
Aside from his role on the school board, Whitney was well-known for his work as a prominent defense attorney for the past 61 years. He handled several high-profile cases, including those of Dr. John Boyle and serial killer Shawn Grate.
Arrangements for Whitney’s funeral are currently pending at Snyder Funeral Homes.
