Traditions for the sake of tradition mean little. Tradition for the sake of honoring those we remember can mean perspective as well as purpose.
Monday’s annual Memorial Day festivities in Bucyrus have traditionally been a time for remembering those to whom much is owed and Memorial Day 2015 that tradition was continued. The community gathered at Oakwood Cemetery prior to the cookouts and family get-togethers.
Led by Parade Grand Marshal and Master of Ceremonies Boyd Long, the event was punctuated by remarks from Retired Marine Corps Lt. Colonel Dave Riedel. Riedel is a 1976 Buckeye Central graduate who received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Riedel, who was credited with flying 60 combat missions in Bosnia, spoke of understanding the price paid by those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their country, and appreciating those who served on our behalf while they are yet living today.
General Logan’s General Order No. 11 was read by Bucyrus High School student Sam Van Voorhis, Abraham’s Lincoln’s Gettysburg address was read by classmate Becca Mutchler.
The Honor Guard of American Legion Post 181 had the honor of providing the Salute to the Dead. Bucyrus High School Marching Band members Taylor Bayless performed Taps.
The Galion community also held its annual Memorial Day ceremony with Amvets District Commander Doug Bowen as the keynote speaker. Parade Marshals were Barbara and Harold Miller. The Galion High School marching Band performed including Taps and the Armed Forces Salute.
