BUCYRUS—Bucyrus City Council Clerk, Susan Zolovick, is resigning as Bucyrus City Council Clerk.

Councilman Kevin Myers thanked Zolovick for all she has done for the Council. He expressed appreciation for her willingness to stay on until her replacement is selected.

At Myers’s request, an ad hoc committee was appointed to begin the search for a new clerk. Members of the committee are Jenny Vermillion, Kevin Myers, Aaron Sharrock, Vicki Dishon, and Zion Hickman.

The committee will meet for the first time Thursday evening at the conclusion of regular committee meetings.

In other Council news, former Bucyrus Mayor Doug Wilson addressed the Council about the growing theft problem in Bucyrus.

Wilson shared his experiences with shoplifting in his own Haberdashery some years ago. Wilson told the Council he is concerned that businesses like Walmart and Kroger might leave if shoplifting losses begin to cost too much money.

“We worked hard to get Walmart here and to get Krogers to come back. We don’t want to lose them.” Wilson said.
Interim Law Director Brian Gernert explained to Wilson that these stores have their own undercover theft detection policies in place.

“Our Judges take shoplifting very seriously. Since I’ve been prosecuting these cases, I average 4-5 a month.” Gernert said.

Gernert welcomed Wilson’s suggestion that discussions on how to prevent shoplifting should include businesses and local law enforcement.

Mayor Jeff Reser told Wilson he would personally speak to the Police Chief about his concerns.

The Council adopted resolutions on zoning specifics regarding portable shipping and storage containers and new policies on Taxi Cab licensing.
