A proposed tree ordinance and a state bridge repair were among the topics discussed at the Bucyrus City Council joint committee meeting Thursday, October 5.

The greatest attention was given to a proposed tree ordinance. There were many updates regarding a code template, which was tailored to meet the needs of Bucyrus. It was then forwarded to City Law Director Rob Ratliff. Ratliff made some changes regarding enforcement.

The biggest concern discussed was the proximity of trees with transmission and power lines. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has been working closely with the city to ensure that their standards are clearly defined and met.

Mayor Jeff Reser said, “The No. 1 priority is safety for the City of Bucyrus.”

He went on to explain that the city will take inventory of the dead trees that need to come down after Jan. 1, due to safety concerns. ODNR will assist with the risk assessments.

Previously, the city did not have a solid tree management plan due to lack of funding. Last year, the council approved a budget to fund the management of trees. They were thanked for approving it.

Council will discuss the tree ordinance at the next committee meeting Oct. 19.

The Ohio Department of Transportation has identified the need to perform bridge repairs due to an over height truck accident where SR 4 crosses under U.S. Route 30 Westbound within the city limits. In cooperation with the director of transportation, the City of Bucyrus gave consent for the improvements. No funds are required from the city for the project.

In other meeting news, the finance committee discussed a variety of appropriations. Additional funding was approved to provide more training for D.A.R.E. officers. Funds were also approved for the salary and benefits for a solid waste officer.

Council also noted that the Santa House will be relocated to Schines Art Park later this year.
