There’s a new contest to enter at the 2013 Crawford County Fair and it has nothing to do with ridin’, ropin’ or showing animals of any kind. But it will benefit those that do. WBCO, WQEL and Crawford County Now are teaming up with the Crawford County Young Professionals to host the first Crawford County Cornhole Tournament. The event will be held beginning at 6 p.m. at the Youth Building on July 17.

The idea of a cornhole tournament open to all comers was the brainstorm of WQEL morning host Will Beard.

“It’s something everybody can do, something everybody can enjoy. Some people do it professionally and some people do as a hobby,” Beard said. “But I think it’s something everyone can rally around and enjoy and it benefits a good cause.”

Beard said there was one group that quickly came to the forefront when discussions were held about hosting an event like that. No one else in the area was even a close second to the Crawford County Young Professionals.

“They’ve run a couple of tournaments before this and they know what they’re doing,” Beard said. “I think it’s a nice tie-in with the Young Professionals group. It gets their name out there and gets them some exposure.”

The cost is $10 per two-person team and all proceeds will go to Crawford County 4-H. The money will go towards support of the local clubs – both those who have members that show animals and those who are involved with the myriad of other non-animal projects available.

Teams may register at the radio station offices at 403 East Rensselaer Street in Bucyrus. Those who register to play will receive a one-day pass to the fair and lanyards for the players with team numbers. There will be a random drawing to determine match-ups.

The grand prize to the winning team of the elimination is two 39-inch flat screen televisions. Other prizes include shop vacs, tickets to see the Cleveland Indians play, and various gift cards from area businesses.

“Remember,” said Beard. “All the money raised will go to the Crawford County 4-H program.”
