NEW WASHINGTON – The New Washington Village Council spent a few minutes during the beginning of its regular meeting recognizing a group that the council’s members felt continuously go above and beyond the normal actions of a citizen.

American Legion, Carl A. Geiger Post 405 received a framed letter from council with six Legion members in attendance.

Council President Joe Blum called Post 405, “a cornerstone of our community.”

He thanked the organization for hosting and sponsoring events such as a village carnival in the past, Memorial Day services, Easter egg hunt, Santa Claus visits, sending high school students to Buckeye Boys State and for providing overall care and support to local soldiers and veterans.

The presented letter thanked the group for, “making a positive difference in the community and in the lives of the residents of the Village of New Washington.”

In other council business, council dispensed of the requirement to read a resolution three times and passed an issue granting Mayor Ben Lash permission to enter a two-year agreement to keep Tim Obringer as the solicitor for the village.

Clerk-Treasurer Julie Cronau reported to council Richland Engineering recently reported the condition of a bridge on East Mansfield Street needing attention. Council agreed to have the bridge further assessed once the snow and ice thaws.

Council also agreed to have a public hearing on the possible closing of an alley on the edge of the village. No date was set for the hearing.

Obringer gave an update on not allowing large commercial vehicles on side village roads. He said it would be possible for council to enforce, but council would have to become specific on what vehicles would be banned and on what streets.

The next council meeting is Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.
