MOUNT GILEAD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A Mount Gilead man was killed early Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash at a Morrow County intersection, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:43 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 24 and County Road 228.

Investigators say Michael L. Petros, 55, of Caledonia, was driving a 2012 Honda Accord southeast on County Road 228 when he failed to yield at a stop sign. His vehicle was struck by a 2017 Jeep Wrangler traveling southwest on County Road 24, operated by John A. Walker, 43, of Mount Gilead.

Following the impact, both vehicles traveled off the southwest corner of the intersection, where the Honda Accord struck a tree.

Walker was pronounced deceased at the scene. Troopers confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Petros, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Mount Gilead Post is leading the investigation. It is currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Assisting at the scene were the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Morrow County EMS, Delaware County EMS, and the Elm Valley Fire Department. The Highway Patrol reminds all motorists that wearing a seatbelt significantly increases the chances of surviving a motor vehicle accident.
