BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Bucyrus City Council is providing the following information to clarify how Council communicates meeting notices, cancellations, and other updates to the public.

Council Communication and Facebook

Bucyrus City Council does not currently maintain a separate Council Facebook page. The previous Council Facebook page was discontinued when a former Council President left Council in December 2025.

The City of Bucyrus maintains its own Facebook page. At the beginning of the current Council term in January 2026, the then Council President indicated that a separate Council Facebook page was not desired and that Council business should not be posted on the City’s Facebook page. Accordingly, Council did not request Council-related Facebook posts from the city during that period.

Council understands the citizens’ frustrations with the current method of communication regarding social media, and intends – once a new council president is installed – to review the benefits to the community in establishing a dedicated Council Facebook page.

Council Meeting Notices and Cancellations

  • Council follows the following process for meeting cancellations and related notices: Meetings are cancelled by the Council President, or, in the President’s absence, by the President Pro Tempore.
  • The Council Clerk sends cancellation notices, as required, by email to local news outlets, City Administration, and Council members.
  • The Council Clerk updates meeting dates and cancellations on the City of Bucyrus website. Council meeting information can be found at www.cityofbucyrusoh.us. On the City’s homepage, scroll down to the Bucyrus City Council Meetings section. Meeting dates and cancellations are listed there, and the section can be selected for additional Council information.

The City’s Communications Director does not independently post Council business unless requested to do so by Council or City Administration.

Council provides meeting notices to local news media but does not control whether, when, or how individual news outlets publish or communicate those notices. Council asks that meeting announcements be shared at the earliest convenience; however, each news organization determines its own publication and communication practices.

August 2026 Meeting Cancellations

Council would also like to clarify the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of the August 3 and August 18, 2026, regular Council meetings.

The current Council President Pro Tempore had a preplanned vacation for both dates. At the time, the Council President had indicated that he would preside over the August meetings, so the President Pro Tempore was not expected to be needed.

The Council President resigned on July 24, 2026. Following that resignation, the President Pro Tempore became the only Council member able to preside over a Council meeting. A new President Pro Tempore could not be appointed until the next regularly scheduled Council meeting. Therefore, a new President Pro Tempore could not be appointed in advance of the August 3 meeting or through a special meeting.

The regularly scheduled Council meeting on August 3 occurred while the President Pro Tempore was on the previously scheduled vacation. As a result, there were no Council members available to preside over the meeting. The same circumstances applied to the August 18 meeting.

Although the regular Council meetings could not be held, Council continued to hold its regularly scheduled committee meetings throughout August in order to continue addressing community business and serving residents.

Looking Ahead

The Republican Central Committee is scheduled to appoint a new Council President on August 27, 2026, to complete the remainder of the 2026–2027 term. As a result, Council expects to have a new Council President in place for the next regularly scheduled Council meeting on September 1, 2026.

The Bucyrus City Council remains committed to serving the citizens of Bucyrus and communicating important Council information as effectively as possible. At times,

circumstances outside of Council’s control can affect the ability to conduct a scheduled meeting. Council appreciates the community’s patience and understanding when these situations occur.
