Girl Scouts from across the county made their way to Woodlawn United Methodist Church on Sunday for the annual World Thinking Day.

The event is celebrated throughout the world on Feb. 22.

“We hold our event on the weekend so all the troops from the entire county can come together,” said Nancy Lipscomb, who has been a Girl Scout leader for the past decade.

Lipscomb said each troop chooses a country to represent and learns about that country’s customs, including food.

“Each troop brings food items from each of the countries that were chosen to be represented,” Lipscomb said. “The girls get to try the foods along with hot chocolate.”

Quintessa Spellbound from Troop 661 in Bucyrus attempted to make macarons to represent France.

“They are one of the hardest to make but mine did not turn out too bad but we bought some to bring to the event,” Spellbound said.

Connie Welborn’s troop chose the country of Greece and invited a guest speaker to the event.

“We invited Bill Gasuras, who is from Greece, to speak to the girls,” Welborn said.

Gasuras spoke about the country that he hailed from 63 years ago to make a life in the United States along with Greek foods such as gyros, souvlaki, and the popular desert, baklava, which Welborn’s troop brought for the event.

“It was fun to speak to the Girl Scouts about Greece, our customs and foods,” Gasuras said.

Courtney Woerlein and her sister, Sydney, are part of Troop 1919 in Galion.

“It’s fun to learn about other countries and the different foods they offer,” Courtney said.

The sisters’ troop chose Mexico and Japan to represent at the event.
