BUCYRUS–History will come alive next weekend during a special community event to be held at the Cabin at Willow Hollow, 5183 Stetzer Road.

History Reenactment Days will take place Thursday, May 4, Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

A look back at the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and Pioneer Days in America.

“As I get older, I’m more interested in history, forgotten history in the community, and how important it is,” said Richard Hancock, one of the event’s organizers. “We want to make it available to the community to where it’s not forgotten.”

Hancock and his wife, Wanda, run the Cabin at Willow Hollow. Helping them plan the event is John Cauvel of Crestline, who has been reenacting the Civil War for 30 years as a Union soldier and member of the 64th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in Mansfield.

Cauvel will also share his living history knowledge during sit-down storytelling sessions Thursday at 1 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. He will set up a tent and bring his collection of war artifacts, including shells and uniform buckles.

“I have a passion for those things, old things,” said Cauvel, a member of the Bucyrus Preservation Society and the Crawford County History Alliance.

“I try to keep history real.

I think that’s why people get involved doing the reenacting thing.”

In addition to Civil War history, Hancock said representatives from the Preservation Society will be on hand all three days to give visitors an overview of the historic Toledo & Ohio Central Train Station in Bucyrus, which has undergone a major restoration.

History Reenactment Days, Hancock said, will also feature Adam Cox, who will demonstrate blacksmithing and offer a history of the craft and modern forging – another activity that should be educational and entertaining to young and old alike, he said.

The Cabin at Willow Hollow, which opened for business ten years ago, sells a variety of arts and crafts, woodworking, antiques, and primitive wares and gifts.
