BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Ohio Mutual Insurance Group is responding to a massive influx of claims following a severe windstorm on Friday, March 13, which is projected to cost the company approximately $30 million.
Todd Boyer of Ohio Mutual joined Community Spotlight to discuss the impact of the storm, which brought sustained 60 mph winds across Ohio and Indiana. The event ranks as one of the costliest single-day storms in the company’s history, generating a month’s worth of claims in just 24 hours. Despite the heavy losses, Boyer noted that the absence of hail allowed for quicker damage assessments.
Boyer also highlighted industry shifts, including the cautious integration of AI and changes to roof coverage.
“We are building tools using AI to provide faster, accurate answers for our agents and members, but we are being very careful with data governance,” Boyer said. He also explained that many insurers are moving toward “Actual Cash Value” for older roofs to manage rising replacement costs.
