BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—City officials are urging residents to report blighted properties while actively working to reform how local maintenance violations are penalized.
Bucyrus Property Maintenance Inspector Gordon Grove and Law Director Brandon Gobrecht outlined enforcement procedures, noting that neglected properties often damage values within a three-block radius. Grove enforces the city’s current code, which mandates a 10-day notice for minor violations like grass exceeding six inches, trash pileups, or junk vehicles. Major structural issues trigger a 30-day notice to repair or demolish.
If compliance fails, cases move to court. However, Gobrecht is currently collaborating with Bucyrus City Council to replace the current International Property Maintenance Code with a local ordinance. Under current law, all infractions carry a first-degree misdemeanor.
“Nobody needs a first-degree misdemeanor just because they got to mow their grass,” Gobrecht said. “I’m trying to get that changed.”
