BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A Norfolk Southern train derailment that occurred on the evening of July 5 continues to impact the city of Bucyrus as local officials work to resolve the situation and reopen key infrastructure.
The incident took place at the rail crossing near Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue. The derailment prompted an immediate response from Norfolk Southern, which dispatched specialized rail crews to the scene to begin cleanup and recovery operations. As of mid-July, the Whetstone Street and Auto Avenue crossing remains closed to traffic.
Officials said updates regarding the reopening of the road will be shared with the public as soon as they become available.
The derailment triggered a significant multi-agency emergency response to ensure public safety. Local authorities, including the Bucyrus Police Department, Bucyrus Fire Department, and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, were joined by the Crawford County EMA, Ohio EMA, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Red Cross. Additionally, Bucyrus City Schools provided support by opening the local high school as an emergency evacuation site.
The evacuation order was issued as a precautionary measure because of a derailed tanker car containing hydrochloric acid. Local officials expressed their gratitude to the residents who evacuated their homes without hesitation, noting that such cooperation is vital when responders are navigating the uncertainties and risks associated with hazardous materials incidents.
