The firefighters in the Bucyrus Fire Department see their duty of public service as more than a job. They see it as a lifestyle.
During the month of October local residents may often catch a glimpse of Bucyrus firefighters when pink underneath their uniforms to show support for those affected by breast cancer.
October is breast cancer awareness month.
“It’s just something to show those in our community some support,” firefighter Kevin Phillips said. “It comes with the job. Someone might go their whole career without pulling a person out of a fire, but we can still show support for our community in other ways every day.”
Firefighter Casey Easterday agreed with the statement.
“Certain types of people go into jobs that are service focused,” Easterday said. “You don’t typically find people who take those jobs just because they can. You find people who really want to help others.”
The next mission in serving others for the department is the annual toy drive.
Local firefighters will be around the area Saturday, Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon collecting goods to help local children.
Items able to be accepted include new toys, food items and monetary gifts. All collections will be donated to serve children and families locally, according to Phillips.
“We just want to help those in our community who need it,” Phillips said. “Our main goal is to serve.”
Donations will be accepted at the following Bucyrus locations:
Kroger, Family Farm and Home, Firelands, Peoples Savings and Loan (both locations), FC Bank (both locations, Huntington Bank, Dollar General, Family Dollar and the Bucyrus Fire Department.
