NEWS RELEASE:
The Bucyrus Elementary School will open its doors and welcome guests for a Leader in Me Leadership Day March 22. Representatives from area school districts and others will be in attendance during the daylong event.
The event is designed to allow students and staff with opportunities to showcase their leadership skills. A large number of the Elementary School student body will be engaged in the day’s activities including leading building tours, manning the registration table, serving lunch, performing songs, acting in the skit, speaking as part of the panel discussion, sharing out about their BES Tribe, making placemats and table decor, making the snack, creating gifts for the guests, making videos and more.
“While the staff has done a large portion of the planning, much of the execution of the day is student-led,” explained third grade teacher Kim Haldeman. “An event like this does so much to energize the students, and the pride they have in a job well done stays with them for days and weeks to come.”
Many educators who attend Leadership Day events leave with the motivation to pursue the exploration of The Leader in Me initiative. Inviting people into the Elementary School fulfills its role in sharing out the positive impact that the 7 Habits can have on students and staff.
“It is our hope that our community sees the steps we are taking as a district to prepare our students to become responsible contributing members of society,” said Haldeman.
Guests will have the opportunity to see student-led strategies, examine Leadership Notebooks, hear how The Leader in Me can be implemented within a classroom and look at Leader in Me displays. A panel discussion will be held in the afternoon.
“The panel consists of Adult Lighthouse Team members, Student Lighthouse Team members, sixth grade students from the Bucyrus Secondary School, a parent, an administrator, and a city of Bucyrus representative,” explained Bucyrus Elementary Principal Timothy Souder. “Each panelist will share a bit about their role in The Leader in Me, and also field questions from the guests.”
“This Leadership Day has been a monumental undertaking by our students and staff,” said Kevin Kimmel, Bucyrus Superintendent. “They deserve to be recognized for the time and energy they’ve invested, and I can’t wait to participate in the day’s activities.”
