Crawford County has enjoyed a spectacular season of high school basketball. Proof came at the recent District 6 coaches meetings where three coaches from the county and two players were named coaches and players of the year respectively.
Overall 21 players were named to All-District 6 teams – 11 boys and 10 girls. Four boys and three girls from the area squads received first team honors.
Players of the Year included Macy Sheerer of Bucyrus in Girls Division III and Connor McCreary of Colonel Crawford in Boys Division III.
Sheerer, a senior, became the all-time leading scorer at Bucyrus this season. She has helped Bucyrus to a 16-5 overall record and the Lady Redmen currently hold the third spot in the North Central Conference standings. Sheerer leads the NCC in scoring with an average of 19.1 points per game, is second in assists with 84 for the season, is tops in steals averaging 4.2 and is third in 3-point shooting.
McCreary, also a senior, has helped the Eagles to a mark of 14-4 and second in the NCC. McCreary leads the league in scoring at 19.6 points per game, is third in assists at 4.3 and is fourth in 3-point shooting.
Coaches of the Year include Phil Loy of Buckeye Central for Boys Division IV. The Sheldon household will have a full mantelpiece as both Amy Taylor-Sheldon of Wynford for Girls Division III and David Sheldon at Colonel Crawford for Boys Division III received Coach of the Year honors as well.
Loy currently has his Bucks sitting in first place in the NCC with a record of 16-2 overall and 9-1 in league play. The Bucks have been ranked in the top 10 in the state in the Associated Press poll for boys Division IV most of the season and they are eighth in the latest poll. The Bucks got a top sectional seed at this week’s drawings in Division IV.
Sheldon-Taylor’s Lady Royals have already clinched a share of an NCC title and can claim the 2013-2014 crown outright with win tonight at Riverdale. Wynford is 16-4 overall and 12-1 in NCC action and was also a top seed in the sectional tournament draw.
The Eagles under Sheldon claimed an NCC title last year and are currently one game behind Buckeye Central in the standings with four league contests left to play including a rematch left with the Bucks. Overall Colonel Crawford is 14-4 and are 8-2 in league matchups. The Eagles were also a top seed in the draw for the upcoming sectional tourney.
Crawford County boys who received first team honors along with McCreary were teammate Todd Entenmann in Division III, and Buckeye Central’s Cade Kaple and Austin Wurm in Division IV.
Other boys receiving All-District 6 mention were Galion’s Ridge Durbin in Division II (2nd team); Mason Davis (2nd team) of Wynford in Division III along with honorable mention picks Nate Klingenberger of Colonel Crawford, Jake Glowaski of Wynford, and Brian Snouffer and Greg Patrick of Bucyrus.
