BUCYRUS — David Vreeland, 50, of Marion appeared in Crawford County Common Pleas Court on Monday to address motions made by his attorneys ahead of his upcoming trial.
Vreeland was charged with one first-degree felony charge of rape and one count of a third-degree felony charge of gross sexual imposition. The alleged victims are juveniles.
If convicted, Vreeland faces more than 20 years in prison.
Crawford County Common Pleas Court Judge Sean Leuthold noted that the defense had asked for a number of issues. Leuthold ordered the entire file held by Crawford County Children’s Services be turned over to the court within 14 days. Leuthold said he will review the file in-camera. The judge explained that he would review all evidence in the privacy of his chambers but on camera and then decide which material will be permitted into the trial.
In anoth
er statement, Leuthold put on record that there is a second attorney joining the defense team. Bucyrus attorney Tani Eyer will assist Andrew Motter in Vreeland’s defense.
“I want it on the record that Ms. Eyer is taking this case pro bono in order to get some trial experience. I want it known that I would not compensate two attorneys for one defendant.” Leuthold said.
In other court proceedings, for only the second time since taking the bench, Leuthold sentenced a man to prison for criminal non-support.

Brandon Angles, 27, of Willard admitted to violating the conditions of his community control.
Angles admitted to using a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission, failed to report to his probation officer and was in possession of an unopened Miller Lite beer.
“Lots of folks who fall behind in their child support simply have fallen on bad times. I don’t consider them criminals. This is why I’ve only ever sent two to prison. You, Mr. Angles are a criminal who does not pay his child support,” Leuthold said.
Angles got sentenced to one year in prison.
Leuthold left him with a reminder.
“When you get out, you have to be just a guy who’s catching up on his child support and no longer a criminal who won’t pay,” Leuthold said. “Do you understand?”
