Sears Woods closing for one day
The Crawford Park District is announcing the closing of Sears Woods State Nature Preserve on Saturday, December 16. The Nature Preserve will be closed for a controlled deer hunt sponsored by The Division of Natural Areas and Preserves and the Crawford Park District. This hunt is only open to previously selected hunters.
Raisin’ a Little Hellbender
Thursday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park: The Crawford Park District’s new wildlife ambassador, Crypto the Eastern Hellbender, is ready to make its programming debut! Join Naturalist, Josh Dyer, to learn about Hellbenders in Ohio and what researchers are doing to conserve their populations and habitats to keep them from becoming extinct. A short PowerPoint will be followed by a “meet and greet” with Crypto and some other salamander residents from the Nature Center. Fun for all ages!
Wild Wednesdays
Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598
Come to the Nature Center and enjoy an hour of nature exploration with Crawford Park District Naturalist, Josh Dyer! Program topics will vary and may include a story, short hike, craft, or a visit from an animal. For pre-schoolers and their parents. Come dressed for the weather. Morning and afternoon programs will be similar, just choose the time that best fits your schedule.
Homeschool in Nature: Smells Like Nature
Thursday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park
What’s that smell? Plants and animals both leave different signs or smells behind as a calling card. The Crawford Park District invites Homeschoolers to use their olfactory system to follow different paths in the woods. Classes are limited to 20 students per session. Please call the Crawford Park District to reserve a spot for your 5-12 year old by Dec. 6.
Recycling at Lowe-Volk Park
Saturday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon (due to the weather, there may not be volunteers available to assist with unloading)
The Colonel Crawford Lions Club and The Friends of the Crawford Park District will have a RECYCLE DAY.
We will have a RECYCLE DAY the second Saturday of each month through the year.
We will be accepting:
Cardboard
Clear/brown/green/blue glass (separate by color)
#1 (PETE) plastics
#2 (HDPE) plastics (colors do not have to be separated)
Newspaper/magazines/office paper/junk mail
Steel cans
Aluminum cans
Household batteries
eyeglasses
CFL lightbulbs – from households only, no businesses, please
Laptops, tablets & cell phones.

Any recyclables taken to the Crawford Park District, outside of the second Saturday of every month do not get credited to the Park District. If you would like the money generated from recycling to go to them, you must take your recyclables to the Park District during their monthly collections.
Nature Hike
Saturday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. at Sears Woods, 1486 Mt. Zion Road
Each winter brings with it a new set of challenges for all life forms. Food supplies vary from year to year and of course, the weather patterns play a key role in determining the makeup of winter bird communities. Meet Crawford Park District Naturalist Warren Uxley at Sears Woods State Nature Preserve and find out what this winter will bring. Sears Woods is located west of Bucyrus on Mt. Zion Road.
Pinecone Wreaths
Sunday, Dec. 10 from 1-3 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park
Come make a pinecone wreath! The Friends Crawford Park District will provide the pinecones, a 12” wire form, ribbon, and miscellaneous items from nature. If you have other items you wish to add to your wreath, bring those with you! Call the Crawford Park District by December 8 to reserve your spot. For ages 8 and up. Lowe-Volk Park is located 3 miles north of US Route 30.
