BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—As construction continues on Norton Park on Bucyrus’ north side, the board of Norton Bicentennial Inc. is addressing two important topics ahead of the Independence Day holiday. In a statement released Wednesday, the organization reaffirmed its support for the City of Bucyrus’ proposed park levy while clarifying that the privately funded park will not receive any levy proceeds. The board also announced that Norton Park will remain closed for Fourth of July fireworks viewing this year as construction continues, citing safety concerns at the active work site. The full release appears below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norton Park Update

First, Norton Bicentennial Inc., the private entity that owns Norton Park, currently under construction on the north side of Bucyrus, wholeheartedly supports the proposed City of Bucyrus Park Levy. While we support the Levy, we want to make it clear that as a private entity, with no connection to the City of Bucyrus, Norton Park will not in any way, benefit from the Park Levy. The Levy will support the city owned and operated parks, including Aumiller pool, but Norton Park will not receive funds. We will continue to operate with private donations and grants.

Secondly, the Norton Park site is an active construction site, with many potentially hazardous conditions. Therefore, for this year, the park will not be available for fireworks watching. This is a temporary situation and next year we will be open to the community for parking. Please respect our decision to close the site this year for safety reasons. To be sure, in the future, Norton Park will be welcome to all in support of our community fireworks display. This year however, we need to prohibit access to the potentially unsafe conditions that exist on our site.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.
