GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Avita Home Health & Hospice is dedicated to serving patients in the North Central Ohio area with “Caring Services You Can Trust.”
The non-profit organization, 1220 N. Market St., provides health care and hospice services to patients in their own homes. But it’s also focused on educating the public – another example of a “Community First” organization.
“I think the most important thing is we are locally owned and operated and we’re part of the Avita family,” said Cathy Sapp, RN, the agency’s executive director. “We’re an underestimated entity at times so we’re really trying to express that to people.”
Sapp said the agency – formerly HomeCare Matters – was acquired by the Avita Health System in 2017. Since then, she said, it has continually grown to meet the increased need for home health and hospice services in the eight counties it serves.
“Our focus on truly individualized care is so important in what we do,” said Sapp. “We don’t want people to be afraid of the word ‘hospice.’ For patients it’s truly learning to live and live well and enjoy really special moments with their families.”
Britney McElhatten, medical records specialist, said they want to change the perception of hospice. “We want to educate the community on how it’s a positive thing. Even though no one wants to talk about death, it’s a very important conversation to have with your loved ones.”
McElhatten said the agency each summer hosts a children’s grief camp called “Healing Hearts.” The camp is free for children ages 5-12 and is designed to promote healing. A Car Cruise In planned for Sept. 27 will help raise money for future camps, she said.
Other events are also on tap to get field and office staff more involved, McElhatten said. “Our staff loves our communities and wants to help educate people during difficult times in their lives and help ease the burden some if possible.”
Counseling and grief support are also available through programs, such as “Healing Journey,” “Rays of Hope,” and a monthly social gathering called “Lunch with Friends.” Memorial services honoring patients and those who have died are held twice a year.
An aftercare support team is available to assist children and adults. Avita Home Health & Hospice also provides palliative care, wound care, and other services including physical, speech, and occupational therapy as well as assistance from home health aides with daily living tasks.
Sapp, who started as a patient care nurse and then became clinical manager, said her role is gratifying and she’s thankful to serve the community. “You really get to see the fruits of your labor. It really is the most rewarding type of nursing I’ve ever done.”
