BUCYRUS – A new excavating company in town is “clearing the way” for the operation to become a family business down the road.

CDC Excavating, LLC, 4220 Brokensword Road, is run by Chris and Amanda Garrett. Although it just opened last year, Chris Garrett said he hopes the firm can eventually be passed on to their youngest son, Colin.

After investing in a skid loader and excavator, Garrett said he decided to launch the LLC. “I’ve dabbled on a lot of projects, water lines, sewer, septic, drainage, plus clearing land, building pads, and tear outs. I’ve done some subcontracting too.”

Garrett, 41, said CDC Excavating primarily serves residential customers, whether it’s earth moving, land clearing and grading, digging up trees and debris, removing foundation walls, or trenching for underground utilities to prepare an area for construction.

A native of Bucyrus, Garrett is a 2002 Wynford High School graduate. As a youngster, he helped bale hay for his uncle and quickly learned how to operate a skid loader. “That’s kind of what got it all started, spending summers out in the field.”

He spent 16 years at Bucyrus Blades and then worked briefly as an equipment operator for the city of Bucyrus. “I like being outdoors. I grew up playing in the dirt and I decided to leave there to pursue this,” he said. “I decided to make a go of it.”

The company name is derived from CD Connections, which Garrett’s father, David Garrett, owned and operated. After the elder Garrett retired, Chris Garrett said he changed the name of the business in order to pursue excavating work full time.

The Garretts also have a 19-year-old son, Cooper, and a daughter, Millie, who’s 14. But Garrett said 8-year-old Colin has already taken a liking to his line of work, and to running heavy equipment, even though his feet can’t reach the pedals.
