BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Bucyrus City Council has officially turned down Bruce Truka’s proposal to donate the former YMCA building to the city, citing concerns over maintenance costs and future use.
Councilwoman C. Aaron Sharrock and Finance Committee Chairman Kevin Myers expressed their reservations about accepting the property without more detailed information regarding its upkeep. Myers emphasized the need for a clear plan for the building’s future before considering such a donation.
In response to a request by Crawford County Now, Truka provided a breakdown of potential maintenance costs associated with the building.
In January, utility expenses totaled $97 for AEP electric service and $239 for Columbia Gas, during which time contractors were conducting inspections.
Councilman James Mee noted that with winterization, gas bills could be greatly reduced or even eliminated. Electricity to the building is not mandatory.
In the original calculations, Crawford County Now missed an important insurance option available to the city.
In order to add liability insurance (through the current insurance provider), there would be zero cost to the city.
The original listed premium was for physical property damage, not something the city would acquire.
Potentially, the city could apply with the state to be exempt from paying property taxes.
Property records indicate that Truka, as a private citizen, pays an annual tax obligation of $2,091.14 for the building, listed under Parcel #08-0014921.000.
As the
Bucyrus City Council moves forward, discussions about the future of the former YMCA building and its possible uses are expected to continue.
With the recent information provided, citizens now have a clearer understanding of the commitment necessary to maintain the donation.
Crawford County Now will monitor this evolving situation closely.
