BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 181 has assumed responsibility for the veterans’ banner program in Bucyrus, taking over at the request of the Bicentennial Commission. The program, designed to honor local veterans, also serves as a fundraising effort to support the Squadron’s ongoing community and charitable initiatives.
Since 2016, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 181 has awarded two $1,000 scholarships each year — one for a young man and one for a young woman. These scholarships, which support students in their pursuit of higher education, are just one example of the Squadron’s commitment to both veterans and youth in the community.
In addition to the scholarships, the Squadron also provides support to a variety of local organizations, including the Scouts, Police Explorers, Special Olympics, and Veterans’ Homes. Through their fundraising efforts, the group aims to continue these initiatives.
However, some local residents may have noticed gaps in the display of banners honoring veterans. The reason for this is a $50 renewal fee that was introduced to help sustain and grow the program. “We apologize for the lack of communication regarding the fee,” said a spokesperson for the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 181. “We hope to do better in the future with the support of local media outlets like WBCO/WQEL radio and Crawford County Now.”
Veterans’ families whose banners have been removed are invited to either pay the $50 renewal fee for a second year of display or retrieve the banner from American Legion Post 181, located on East Rensselaer Street. While some other communities charge an annual fee for similar banner programs, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 181 believes that such fees are necessary to support the group’s mission.
While the renewal fee helps sustain the program, voluntary donations are always welcome.
Applications for new and renewal banners will be available at American Legion Post 181 starting January 1, 2025. The firm deadline for banner submissions will be March 1, 2025. Detailed information regarding fees and payment options will be included in the upcoming applications.
