Thursday marked the start of the eighth annual Lincoln Highway-Buyway Sale and brought with it torrents of rain that overtook most of the morning and into the afternoon. By early afternoon, however, the downfall had lightened up a bit.
For this event, sellers along the historic Lincoln Highway bring their wares to be sold out of garages and in yards. The highway runs right through Crawford County, and so Thursday, Friday, and Saturday marks a time of exploration for local bargain hunters.
According to Tim Baird, who has been participating in the sale with his father since its inception in 2005, the morning started out great, but when the rain came, attendance really dropped off. For Baird and another seller down the road, Susan, some really dedicated shoppers came out in ponchos and peeked under the tarps, not allowing heavy rainfall, which amounted in two inches in just an hour and a half, to hinder the experience. By the time the rain stopped around two in the afternoon, however, the crowds came back to enjoy searching through everything from farm tools to books and everything in between.
“The sale is a great thing,” Baird said, “It gives people to chance to get out, look at things, and find what they might be looking for.”
Susan said, “Once a year people clean out their closets, houses, barns, and garages, and we know we are going to have people…I’m glad we did it.”
The sales continue through Friday and Saturday.
