CRESTLINE — Bucyrus baseball coach Sean Maudsley said that his team has had trouble keeping its composure when things go against it.

That wasn’t the case in Crestline Wednesday night.

The Redmen built a 5-1 lead after 4 ½ innings but watched as the Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.

The Redmen, however, were not fazed, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to come away with a 7-5 win.

Bucyrus got its first win of the season, improving to 1-12. Crestline fell to 4-10.

Maudsley said that his team responded like it hasn’t had all season.

“It was nice to see,” Maudsley said. “Sometimes we let innings like that get away from us; we make a couple of errors in the inning,

“In the past couple of weeks, we have been letting things snowball,” he added. “They settled down, they didn’t yell at each other; they picked each other up and made some good plays defensively, although we made some bad plays defensively as well.”

Crestline coach Mitch Sellers said that, while he was happy with the way his team came back, he felt it made too many mistakes.

“We just couldn’t get that timely hit,” Sellers said. “A lot of backward Ks, a lot of K’s in general. We have to adjust to the umpire’s zone. We’ve had him for four games now and we know his zone.

“We’re just not making those adjustments and getting hits at those times when we needed it.”

Crestline scored a run on a walk and two Bucyrus errors to take a 1-0 lead after two innings.

Crestline freshman pitcher Crew Gaskill set down the Redmen over the first three innings, but Bucyrus scored three times in the fourth.

Malachi Bayless tripled and scored on a Crestline error to open frame, before Brayden Campbell doubled to right center and Cody Pennington doubled to left center, scoring Campbell. James Frazier singled, plating Pennington.

The Redmen increased the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth.

Bayless singled, Kam Lewis singled, and a Crestline error scored both runs.

The Bulldogs, however, came back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times.

Austin Henson and Hunter Farrell singled, and, with two Bucyrus errors, scored two runs. Brayden Winemiller doubled to right, scoring two more.

The Redmen responded, scoring a run in the sixth on a single from Frazier and a double from Ashtin Clevenger.

In the seventh, an error and a Lewis double scored another run.

“Off the top of my head, I counted five times where the extra base hits came with two strikes,” Maudsley said. “We’ve not been very good with two strikes this year. We’ve been working and working on that, having a better approach with two strikes.

“We just put the ball in play very well today, one through nine,” he added.

Bayless worked five strong innings on the hill for the Redmen, scattering six hits while fanning five. Campbell finished the game, striking out three.

“Our pitchers threw strikes and then we came back and hit the ball,” Maudsley said.

Gaskill tossed a complete game for the Bulldogs. He permitted 12 hits, but he struck out 10 and walked none.

“This is the second game I think he started for us,” Sellers said of Gaskill. “He was out earlier in the season but I’m very impressed with our pitching staff. They are going to keep us in a lot of games.

“When you are facing a squad with Campbell and Malachi over there and they are putting the bat on the ball, it’s tough to get outs.”
