BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)— A new community garden initiative on Clinton Street is tackling local food insecurity while fostering community education and connection.
The Crawford County Community Garden, which originated as a subcommittee of Crawford County Public Health before evolving into a citizen-led project, features 12 raised beds on a city-owned lot near the local soccer fields. The project operates without tax dollars, relying instead on the Crawford County Community Foundation as its fiscal agent alongside grant funding from United Way and the state’s Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) initiative.
Organizers reported that all 12 beds are fully occupied for the current growing season, with participants cultivating a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. A dedicated board-maintained bed is used entirely to supply local food banks; the group recently completed its first harvest delivery of fresh lettuce.
Due to high demand and swift community buy-in, organizers are currently drafting a five-year strategic plan aimed at expanding the number of available garden beds for next season.
