BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Crawford County Council on Aging (COA) is introducing a new initiative to support seniors in the community. The “Commodity Closet,” as it’s been named, is designed to supplement the grocery budgets of seniors, many of whom are surviving on a fixed income.
Courtney Moody, the activities coordinator at COA, explained that the Commodity Closet is an effort to “fill the gap in a senior’s grocery budget.” The initiative is a response to the rising prices that are impacting the senior community. The Commodity Closet will be open from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on April 15 and 29 at the Council on Aging, located at 200 S. Spring St.
The Commodity Closet operates without income guidelines or sign-up requirements. Seniors are invited to visit during the open hour, sign in, and select the items they need. To ensure that the most seniors are served, there is a limit to the number of items each person can pick at each opening.
Popular items include laundry detergent, cat food, dog food, toilet paper, paper towels, and ready-to-eat food items like Beefaroni and flavored tuna pouches. The Council on Aging is always accepting community donations for the Commodity Closet.
COA Plans Two Senior Bingos This Month
In addition to the Commodity Closet, the COA is offering two bingos for senior citizens this month. The first bingo will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 16 at the Crestline Public Library, and the second will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 23 at the Council on Aging in Bucyrus. Both bingos are sponsored by Legacy Bucyrus.
Monthly Birthday Celebrations for Seniors
The COA has also begun offering a monthly birthday celebration for seniors. April birthdays will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on April 30 at 200 S. Spring St., with dessert provided by Trustwell Living at Carlisle Place. The celebration is open to all seniors, regardless of whether their birthday falls in April.
