BUCYRUS—Mayor Jeff Reser opened the Bucyrus City Council meeting on Tuesday evening by declaring June Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month in Bucyrus.

Reser presented the proclamation to Erica Parnisari, Walk Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Northwest Ohio Chapter.

According to statistics, approximately 220,000 Ohioans are living with Alzheimer’s and early-onset dementia.

The annual care walk to end Alzheimer’s is set for September 17, with walks organized in Crawford, Richland, Ashland, and Knox counties.

For more information on the walk, call the Mansfield office at 419-537-1999.

In other council news, plans were made to include two city parks in the upcoming launch of DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) on July 1.

Both the Schine’s Art Park and Picking Park are to be included in the area that will allow the consumption of alcohol outdoors downtown.

Mayor Reser submitted a letter to council appointing himself and Doug Foght to the TIRC committee but quickly backed down when Brenton Potter reminded him that he (Chairman of Economic Development Committee) wanted on the committee.

Reser said he would be happy to have both Potter and Foght serve on the committee. Since the Mayor may only appoint two persons to the committee when he appointed Potter (in effect), he removed himself from the committee.

Carolyn Shireman

Bucyrus Resident Carolyn Shireman issued a direct challenge to the Mayor for an explanation as to why the city pool has closed at least twice since it opened.

Reser told Shireman the pool closes if the temperature is below 70 degrees, and on Saturday, it was 68 degrees. He also admitted that one closing may have been due to a lack of enough lifeguards.

Safety rules require that one lifeguard be on duty for every 25 swimmers.

Lifeguards are still needed. Anyone interested in applying should call city hall at 419-562-6767.

Citizens can place fallen tree branches at the curb. Reser said city workers are helping with branch removal.

The EPA has received the final plans for the Nevada Water Project.

The Woodlawn Avenue water line project will begin on June 27.

City offices will be closed on July 4. Residents are asked to put their trash out early on Tuesday.
