The financial challenges facing school districts have been well documented. Now, more than ever, schools rely greatly on assistance provided by support organizations whose mission is to enhance the educational experience of students. One organization that has been providing this type of assistance for the Bucyrus Elementary School is its Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).
The Elementary School PTO provides funding for classroom programs, as well as larger initiatives that benefit the larger student body population. Examples of programs the PTO supports include the annual BES Field Day, Right to Read author visits and activities and the third grad Pioneer Day, just to name a few.
“The generosity of the BES PTO has made it possible for science and history to come alive for our third grade students,” third grade teacher Kim Haldeman said. “Our trips to local sites like the Harvey School and Lowe-Volk Nature Center, where students become immersed in active learning experiences, have been funded in part by our PTO.”
In addition to the annual fall fundraiser, the group also leads the collection and redemption of Box Tops for Education. They are also partnered with Kroger in the Kroger Community Rewards program. All of these initiatives are designed to help raise funds to help enhance and extend learning opportunities for BES students.
“PTO has been such a blessing to our school,” fourth grade teacher Scott Tinnermeier said. “They have provided a way for students to experience life outside the walls of BES by helping pay for field trips and providing learning opportunities like COSI on Wheels. These are examples of experiences that many students would not have been exposed to if the PTO did not exist.”
One of the most popular events, hosted by the PTO, is the annual BES Fun Night. Students and parents have the opportunity to play carnival games, enjoy bounce houses and many other activities designed to promote family time.
“The BES PTO is vital in helping our teachers and students experience success in the classroom,” Elementary School Principal Todd Roll said. “The programs and initiatives supported by this outstanding organization are invaluable in enhancing the student educational experience.”
The BES PTO is always looking for new members to join the organization and help continue its support of the Elementary School. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in joining, please email BESPTO@bucyrusschools.org or call the Elementary School at 419-562-6089.
