CRESTLINE — A Crestline teenager is being charged with attempted aggravated murder, aggravated assault, felonious assault and burglary after a stabbing incident on Tuesday evening.

The 17-year-old teen stabbed another Crestline teenager on North Wiley Street.

According to a report from the Crestline Police Department, officers were called to the 200 block of North Wiley Street at 8:32 p.m. regarding a stabbing incident that had taken place minutes before. After officers completed an assessment of the scene and the area was deemed safe for EMT personnel, the victim was taken to Ohio Health in Mansfield for treatment of his stab wound.

Officers began to search for the suspect, who had fled on foot. The K-9 unit was brought in, along with a K-9 unit from the Galion Police Department, but weather conditions and lack of items that may have contained a trackable scent prohibited the use of the dogs.

The 15-year-old victim told police the suspect attacked him while he was in a vehicle driven an adult male known to the juveniles involved. An adult female told police the suspect had been saying strange things and acting out of character before stabbing the other juvenile in the neck.

Officers secured the vehicle, as it is now a crime scene. The adult male gave a brief account of what happened but was unable to provide very much detail as to why the suspect had attacked the other boy.

Later in the evening, the victim was released from the hospital and stayed with a relative at an unknown location until the suspect was apprehended.

Police received a call from a resident in the 700 block of West Bucyrus Street about a suspicious person outside their residence who seemed to be on some kind of substance.

As officers traveled to the residence, a second call came in from the resident that the suspicious person was now inside the home. When police arrived at the residence, they were able to safely remove two small children and two adult females from the residence and placed them in a cruiser to keep warm. The residents advised the suspicious person is the suspect and that he had gone to the second floor of the residence when he found out the police were outside.

Officers were able to apprehend the juvenile without further incident. His mother was called to the police station and the suspect was evaluated for drug use and any injuries upon his arrest. It was determined by EMS personnel that the suspect appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant and he was later drug tested to determine the substance.

The suspect was in possession of a bag of miscellaneous, unidentified pills that was confiscated by officers.

The suspect would not answer officers’ questions while screaming and using profanity. After officers spoke with the victim and other witnesses, it was determined the suspect had created a plan to kill his long-time friend for what he perceived as a betrayal.

Both male teenagers are students at Crestline Exempted Village Schools. Superintendent Matt Henderson alerted parents of an incident involving two students off the school’s campus.

He informed parents the school day continued as scheduled as Henderson stayed in contact with Crestline police. Counselors also were available to students who requested the service.

Henderson said he found no immediate threat to the student body as it was an isolated incident off school grounds and had no additional comment beyond the message previously sent out to parents.
