CAREY (Crawford County Now) — There weren’t a lot of surprises in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference track and field meet here Friday night. Other than the event lasted more than four hours.
Colonel Crawford’s boys (169 points) won the team title over Seneca East (122) and Mohawk (85). Upper Sandusky claimed the girls championship 168-153.5 over the Lady Eagles.
A strong debut
Junior Robin Ehmann won the girls shot put with a personal best of 36-feet, 1.5 inches in her first track season at any level.
“All the coaches have been pushing me to do my best and that’s what I came here to do,” said Ehmann, who earned numerous post-season honors in basketball.
“It’s new and I was hesitant about doing it — off and on about it — but coaches and my friends pushed me and said I’d be good at it. I’m happy with my throws but there’s more work to be done next year.”
The strength factor as a result of playing in the post helps with throwing an 8.8-pound shot put.
“You’ve got to build to get stronger every day,” she said.
Other Lady Eagles winners included Sydney Wirebaugh in the discus at 104-6, a PB; Emmi Powers in the high jump at 5 feet; Cami Roston in the pole vault at 10 feet; and Brooklyn Good in the long jump at 14-10.
One the boys side Jacob Cochran took honors in the 400 meters in 52.24; Roen Thew a PB of 15.54 to win the 110 meter hurdles; Avery Powers ran a PB of 39.43 in the 300-meter hurdles and a 20-feet, 6-inch effort to win the long jump; Dom Dean placed first in the shot put with a season best of 52-feet, .75-inches.
Boggs takes pair, chooses college
Karter Boggs won the 1600 meters in 4:29.29 and took the 3200 meters in 9:55.08.
“I had to run quicker because I just want to get my time down to be number one in the state. I think I’m ranked fourth or third in both. Running it solo, it’s been like that all year so it’s hard to get good times,” he said.
The Bucyrus High School senior won the two events by a combined 30 seconds.
“We’ve always been fighting the weather … I ran a 4:24 with rain and wind. PRs are decent, but they could be better. Competition was decent today, especially in that 800.”
Shawn Auck of Colonel Crawford ran a strong second to Boggs in 10:17.78.
“I’ve got to keep focused and get down to that state meet and get a championship,” Boggs said. “To be ranked where I am running solo is not bad and other guys are running against some of the best times in the state and in the country.”
Next Thursday and Saturday Bucyrus, Buckeye Central, Mohawk and Carey compete, along with the hosts, in the Division V district meet at Colonel Crawford.
“I plan to run the 4X800 and 3200 the first day and the next day the 1600. The goal for the relay is to try to get the guys out. They’ve been so close every year,” Boggs said.
Boggs hopes to run “9:30 and under 4:20. There will be some pretty good competition there, including Colten Keller of Crestline. That guy’s a beast. I love running against him.”
Last week Boggs chose Tiffin University and signed a letter of intent to attend this fall.
“I decided on Tiffin because they’re close to home and offer an amazing academic and athletic team,” he said. “I see a very good possibility to grow there as an athlete and overcome some barriers I want to get to in running.”
Boggs said the Exercise and Health program attracted him to the school.
“They have some guys there who I’ve run against over the years, so I’m looking forward to that also,” he said.
