BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A late-night breaking-and-entering investigation in Bucyrus turned into a pursuit Monday evening, September 14, after officers identified a suspect who resisted arrest and escaped.
According to the Bucyrus Police Department, officers pursued the suspect as additional officers responded and a perimeter was established. Deputies with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office assisted Bucyrus officers in containing the area.
During the pursuit, BPD K9 Officer Wireman fell into an empty pond and sustained serious injuries. Wireman was transported for medical treatment and was listed in stable condition. Police have not released the location of the medical facility.
The pursuit continued as officers worked to locate the suspect, who was ultimately found on E. Rensselaer Street.
Police said the suspect again resisted arrest but was taken into custody without further incident. Two additional Bucyrus police officers suffered injuries during the struggle, although their injuries did not require serious medical treatment.
The suspect was transported to the Crawford County Justice Center and will remain in custody pending review of potential charges by the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office. Police have not released the suspect’s name or specific charges while that review is pending.
The Bucyrus Police Department credited its officers with professionalism, dedication and teamwork during the incident, saying their efforts helped bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
The department also thanked the Bucyrus Fire Department for responding, assisting injured officers and providing care to Officer Wireman. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and its deputies were also recognized for their assistance.
As Officer Wireman and the other injured officers recover, the department is asking the community to keep them in their thoughts.
The incident remains under review as prosecutors determine the appropriate charge
