GALION — The game does not seem too fast for freshman Landon Campbell.
Campbell, a pitcher for the Galion baseball team, used a good fastball and a solid change to buffalo a good Crestline team.
The Galion freshman allowed just four hits, striking out six and he did not walk a batter as the Tigers blanked the Bulldogs, 10-0, in five innings.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 10-6 overall. They are 5-4 in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference. Crestline fell to 10-6 overall, and the Bulldogs are 6-2 in the Mid-Buckeye Conference.
Galion coach Neil Schaffner said that his freshman has been throwing strikes ever since coming up to the varsity.
“(Campbell’s) thrown strikes all year and we brought him up probably a month ago and we brought him in slowly,” Schaffner said. “This was a good game for him to come out and compete. He did a great job today.
“He has a good change-up. I didn’t teach it to him,” Schaffner added with a chuckle. “He hit spots and then mixing that change-up in. We have to work to develop his curveball, as he gets older. But the two pitches he used today was a good fastball that they had to stay honest on, and the change-up was really spotting.”
Neither team hit the ball hard on a very windy afternoon. In fact, the Tigers got just four hits against Crestline pitchers Caden Parsons, Alijah Evans and Blake Guiler. But they took advantage of four Crestline errors and six walks to score 10 runs.
Crestline coach Mitch Sellers said that he was impressed with the way the Tigers played.
“They did all team stuff right,” Sellers said. “They fielded the ball well and they put the ball in play. They made plays and they made us make plays, and, unfortunately, we didn’t do that tonight.”
Galion took a 2-0 lead in the second without getting a hit. The Tigers took advantage of two Crestline errors in the inning and got RBI ground outs from Donahvin Martin and Matt McMullen.
The Tigers took a 6-0 lead in the third, getting a sacrifice fly from Spencer Keller and an RBI groundout from McMullen.
Galion scored four more times in the fifth, getting hits from Brady Symsick and Wilson Frankhouse and four walks.
“We had some really good team at-bats,” Schaffner said. “There was an inning there we had two runs and we didn’t get a base hit. We get a walk; we get a guy on base and we move the ball around. That’s really good, solid team at-bats. Very unselfish from our team tonight.”
All three Crestline pitchers struggled to throw strikes on the night.
“I don’t want to make any excuses for them, but they expect more, and I think that the next time they come out both will pitch better,” Sellers said of his pitchers.
