At Wednesday evening’s softball game between Wynford and Mohawk, the opening ceremonies were a bit more celebratory than the typical pre-game activities.

Wynford senior Victoria Hoerig thanks those in attendance and various sponsors for helping her with her senior project, installing a flag pole at the Wynford softball field.

Wynford senior Victoria Hoerig presented to the crowd and her school the final product of her senior seminar project: a flagpole for the softball field.

Every senior has to complete a project, and Hoerig saw a great opportunity to support a loved one of hers who is serving in the Air Force.

“I also saw the whole issue NFL players protesting during the national anthem and I wanted to find a way to honor all of those serving our country,” Hoerig explained.

Hoerig talked to the crowd, thanking multiple sponsors and benefactors for their monetary and material and labor donations.

One of the highlights of the event was when Barbara Taylor, deputy district director for Congressman Jim Jordan, presented Hoerig with a flag and a certificate saying the flag had previously flown above the Capitol Building in Washington D.C.

Taylor explained Hoerig’s request for a flag to dedicate to Wynford and the softball team was referred to her, and she was very moved by the young woman’s hard work that showed her love and pride for her country.

“It’s a unique thing in this time,” Taylor said.

Following the presentation and the raising of the flag, the men’s singing group, United in Harmony, sang the national anthem.

Hoerig said the weather played a huge factor in her project, delaying her presentation from its original date of March 28.

“I’m thankful and blessed that everyone was so understanding and able to come at the rescheduled time and do this for me,” she said.

Hoerig plans to attend Ohio State University in Marion in the fall to major in dental hygiene.
