Colonel Crawford eighth grader Chloe Carman bested 16 other contestants Thursday night to become the 2014 Crawford County Spelling Bee champion.
Lasting over 27 rounds, the spelling tournament pitted students from Colonel Crawford, Buckeye Central, and Wynford against each other. Carmen’s final word to seal the championship was “memoir.”
Carman explained her preparation procedures for the spelling bee. “We get a list of words and I just studied those words.
“I write them down and my mom quizzes me over them,” Carman continued.
Colonel Crawford also took both of the runner-up positions in the bee with Carman’s fellow classmate Karlie Kurtzman placing second and seventh grader Erica Giles taking third.
It paid to be a good speller as first place took home $50, second place received $30, and third place received $20. The cash prize was donated by the Rotary Club of Bucyrus.
With the victory Colonel Crawford will hold the traveling trophy until next year’s County Spelling Bee.
The top six from the spelling bee will move on to the Tri-County Spelling Bee which will pit the top six students from Crawford, Morrow, and Richland counties against each other. Representing Crawford County will be Carman, Kurtzman, Giles, Wynford fourth grader Neil Groth, Buckeye Central eighth grader and the 2013 Crawford County Spelling Bee champion Zoe Rutledge, and Wynford sixth grader Thomas Kurek.
The Tri-County Spelling Bee will take place at 6:30 p.m., March 18, at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center.
At 9:30 a.m. on March 22, Carman, Wynford’s Brionna Hill, and Rutledge will participate in the Regional completion of the Scripps Spelling Bee at Ohio University in Athens.
