Cooler temperatures and above average rainfall did not hurt corn and soybean crops in Ohio for 2014. Records were set in the Buckeye State for both crops, in spite of wet weather leading to late planting.
The average corn yield was 176 bushels per acre, two bushels better than 2013. A total of 3.47 million acres of corn was planted in Ohio. The total corn production was down 6 percent from 2013 due to fewer acres being planted.
Soybean yields also set a state record at 52.5 bushels per acre, up three bushels from 2013. Overall soybean acreage was at an all-time high and when combined with the record yield, Ohio farmers realized a 14-percent increase in production from 2013. The record soybean production in 2014 amounted to 254 million bushels.
