SHELBY, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Pioneer Career and Technology Center is expanding its hands-on career training and academic electives this fall as it prepares to welcome incoming eighth-graders from across north central Ohio.

Academic Supervisor Dan Slaughter recently discussed the district’s latest upgrades, noting the campus is in its first full year of operating a new advanced manufacturing wing and has just opened a high-demand electrical trades lab led by an industry veteran.

During the first week of November, eighth-grade students from Pioneer’s 14 partner schools across five counties will tour the Shelby campus to explore the state-of-the-art facilities and career-tech labs ahead of their junior and senior years.

In addition to trade programs, Pioneer has broadened its academic electives to prepare students for life after graduation. Offerings include a second-year forensic science course featuring crime scene labs taught by an instructor who trains alongside law enforcement professionals, as well as sports history, entertainment history, and entrepreneurship. An “adulting” course also brings students directly into the career labs to learn practical skills like checking vehicle oil, changing tires, and basic home wiring.

While gaining technical and career experience at Pioneer, juniors and seniors remain fully active in sports and extracurriculars at their home high schools. The district also offers a comprehensive adult education program and local business partnership opportunities.
