CRESTLINE, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A new carry-out kitchen in town is serving up “comfort food done right.”
Triple D Hometown Kitchen & Concessions, 103 Cross Street, opened a storefront location in the former Checker’s Pizza building May 20. But the locally owned business has operated food trailers in the area for years.
“I’m very pleased. It’s been busy so far,” said owner Cheryl Downey, who runs the operation with her husband, Ron Downey, and 16-year-old son, Douglas. “The community support has been amazing.”
Downey, who used to travel with the concession side of the business, now oversees the sandwich shop, crafting menus and preparing her homemade macaroni salad, broccoli salad, pickled eggs, and other items for the deli case in front.
Triple D offers soups made fresh daily, plus paninis, wraps, salads, burgers, gyros, and other quick lunch options. A variety of dinner specials are also available beginning at 4:30 p.m., either by ordering in person or calling ahead.
Downey said soft- and hard-shell tacos on “Taco Tuesday” have been a big hit with customers so far. “Tacos on Tuesday are huge. Dinners on Thursday and Friday nights are too, and so are the daily lunch specials.”
The business, she said, had always been a dream. When she was diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago, Downey and her husband put a plan in motion and bought the red concession trailer, naming the business Triple D after their son’s initials.
Traveling, however, has recently taken its toll on her, Downey said. Now, Ron is in charge of trailering the concession stand – known for its donut burgers – to car shows, festivals, and county fairs, while she and Douglas focus on the sandwich shop.
Triple D Hometown Kitchen plans to offer a delivery service as well as the convenience of online ordering later this summer, Downey said. They also hope to introduce breakfast fare and eventually add indoor seating for diners, she said.
“I would rather open up in the town I live in and give back to the community than open up in a town that’s not mine,” said Downey, who has been proud to call Crestline home for 18 years now.
Triple D Hometown Kitchen is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-orders can be placed by calling 567-355-3900.
